“The Love Sponge” Putnam was born in Newcastle, Pennsylvania
on May 30, 1971. At the mere age of six, Putnam would sit on a bar stool, eating
pretzels and drinking soda, silently absorbing the shots made by all the local
hustlers. After letting all of the knowledge soak in, Putnam finally got serious
about the sport of pool at the age of seventeen.
Although he participated in his first professional tournament at nineteen,
Shawn feels he really became professional in 1999. The Love Sponge was a six-time
consecutive Viking Tour Player of the Year, and this year has won the Pittsburgh
Open and the Valley Forge Players Championship, making him one of the only competitors
to ever win back to back professional events.
